Setup - Step by Step Guide

To progress through the Setup Wizard, you need first to complete the Setup tab. Please note that once you finish adding details in the setup tab, you won’t be able to return to edit this tab. If you wish to make any changes after that, you have to go to the account settings for the same.

1) Add Business Details

Under this section, you have to enter your website URL, business type and platform you want to integrate with. There is a list of platforms available for integration. In case you don’t find your integration on the list, click on Show More or Other.

2) Connect Your Platform

Once you select the type of platform you want to integrate with the Klaviyo, click on Continue. To successfully connect the platform, you need to authenticate first with your login details.

3) Add Brand Information

At this step, you have to enter your Company’s physical address along with Sender’s name and email. The sender email and name will be default for future campaigns and flows. It is advisable to use business email (ending with @domain name) for sending bulk Emails so that it doesn’t look like spam mail.

Many reliable domain providers are available online that offer you business email based on your domain and website. After checking their price plans, you can use any of them like Hostgator, Bluehost, Godaddy, etc.

Now, under the Design section, choose branding and social links.

a) Brand

Branding includes choosing your brand color scheme, uploading the brand logo and font type. Once you choose all these based on your brand’s theme, click on Continue.

At any point, if you wish to change or update your brand’s color scheme or logo or font, you can make the changes by heading to the “Brand Library” tab of your account.

b) Header and Social Links

The header and social links are crucial to add as the header link will display in the header of the mail while the social links will appear in the footer. It is advisable to add not more than 4 links in the header to avoid cluttering.

The same goes with the social links (add only the relevant ones). Once you are satisfied with your header and social links, click on “Continue”.

4) Confirmation

After entering all the crucial details, the final step involves the verification of your email address. Enter the primary email address that you want to keep for further contact purposes with Klaviyo. Now go to your mailbox to verify the link sent by Klaviyo (the link will expire in 72 hours). Once you verify the link, the Setup Wizard will be completed, and you will be taken to the Dashboard.

Creating an Email Campaign

Creating an Email Campaign in Klaviyo is a little time-consuming initially but really easy even for a non-techie person. Here is a step-by-step guide to creating your first email marketing campaign with Klaviyo:

1) Upload a Target List

Firstly, you have to create a compiled list of all those contacts which you want to include in your email marketing strategy. You can also upload the contact list of your previous customers or event attendees if you have created any CSV in the past. Ensure that your target list must be in CSV format and not above 50MB to upload.

2) Build Base Templates

According to the different types of campaigns you want to create, you have to build your base templates first. For that, follow these steps:

  • Go to the “Create Template” tab and build saved “blocks” information to use for future emails.
  • This block information will remain standard across all mails, so take your time to build them nicely and include every crucial thing regarding your website that you want to promote in the mail.

3) Write an Attention-Grabbing Subject Line

Once you create your recipients’ list and base template, the next important thing is to write a catchy subject line to grab readers’ attention.

The subject line must be creative, unique and focusing on CTA to spark readers’ interest. You can choose your tone according to your brand’s type and identity (whether you want to add some humor or want to keep it formal).

4) Add Preview Text

Just like the Subject line, Preview Text is also crucial as it gives the reader an idea of what the email is about. Thus it should be related to the subject line and must be creative, informative & engaging.

For example: If you are promoting your apparel brand’s season sale in the Subject line by highlighting discount coupons, the preview text must have other necessary and informative details about the Sale, like on which items the discount is valid, and so on.

5) Create the Campaign Content

By content, we don’t mean that you should only include the text part in your mail copy. The campaign content must be eye-catching, and for that, you can add GIFs, graphics, CTA, infographics, customer reviews and many other elements.

6) Send a Preview Email

Before sending the email to your engaged and potential customers, Klaviyo lets you proofread and test what your email will look like through a Preview Email option.

You can send a preview mail to yourself or your team to check how your subject line, the preview text and other things will appeal to the readers so you can make the final edits and corrections if there is any.

7) Schedule or Send the Email

Once you are satisfied with the email content, you can schedule the campaign for a future date or time or send it immediately as per your convenience. It is advisable to check your website’s analytics to understand the suitable time to send the email to your active customers.

Email Campaign Ideas

There can be thousands of occasions to send emails to your engaged and potential customers, but to effectively strategize your email marketing, we have covered a few special occasions that you must not miss out on to leave a strong impression.

1) Welcome New Subscribers

The most important occasion is when someone subscribes to your campaigns. You can design a personalized welcoming message for them to greet them and share some exciting code or discount offers for new users. This will educate them about your brand and services & they might think to buy something using that code.

2) Announce Promotions

Many companies spend money on Google and Social media ads to promote their ongoing promotions but don’t bother about email marketing. If you want a better ROI, it is advisable to spread the word about your ongoing or upcoming promotions through Email marketing.

3) Tell Your Brand’s Story

Every brand has a story that must reach the readers. It is better to tell people about your brand, goals, vision and how you started in a story form to create an emotional bond with them. It also helps you to gain your customers’ trust.

4) Ongoing Newsletters

You cannot send the same email content to all your subscribers as they are different. There can be few who have already purchased something from your store, while some can be your potential customers. Thus, you need to categorize them into different segments based on their purchase behavior.

In Klaviyo, a list segmentation option lets you make different segments of subscribers send them tailor-made emails as per their interest.

Some of the most common types of list segmentation follow by most of the stores on Klaviyo are:

  • Frequent Buyers
  • Subscribers who have purchased in the past
  • Subscribers who have not bought anything yet
  • Gift givers
  • Repeat Customers

Automated Klaviyo Flows

Automated Flows in Klaviyo are one of the most useful features as it let you timely send custom mails and messages to your subscribers based on their actions. You can automate emails to send at a particular action, like when someone abandons a cart or makes a purchase.

Some most popular Flows ideas people are automating on Klaviyo:

1) Welcome Series Workflow

Welcome series flow is for those who subscribe to your newsletter or make their first purchase on your site. To such subscribers, you can send a tailor-made email or SMS that educates them about resources, services, products, tools and discount codes offered by you. It should be both engaging and informative.

2) Abandoned Cart Flow

The next crucial workflow to automate is the abandoned cart flow. There are multiple potential customers who left things in their cart due to various reasons. You can convert that lead into sales by sending them an automated message related to the product they are willing to purchase.

3) Post-Purchase Appreciation Flow

To cross-sell other related products to the customers after their post-purchase, you can send them a thank you mail along with highlighting your best-selling related products that might be useful for them. Klaviyo’s Products feed incredibly displays all the recommended products to potential customers to enhance the sale.

4) Customer Winback Flow

Winback flows are generally for those customers who have made purchases in the past but are not actively shopping on your site. For such customers, you can send an email with information about the latest collection, exclusive discount codes for them or any ongoing sale that they must know about.

The Winback flow must be scheduled in a way that it doesn’t bombard subscribers’ inboxes, and for that, you can choose Klaviyo’s Smart Sending feature.

5) Back in Stock Flow

Many customers sign up for your newsletter to receive notifications about the restocking of particular products they are willing to purchase. If you frequently restock your catalog, this flow is an absolute necessity for you.

6) Product Review Flow

Excellent customer reviews are crucial for any business, but only a few customers leave their reviews after making a purchase. In Klaviyo, you can connect your review app and automate a product review flow to send emails to those customers who have purchased on your website but haven’t shared their reviews yet. In exchange for a review, you can offer them something beneficial or exciting.

Three Email Marketing Campaigns to Try

With Klaviyo, you can experiment with multiple email marketing campaigns to enhance your sales. But here we are mentioning the most crucial and effective three campaigns that every business must try for their growth:

1) The Abandoned Cart Campaign

Do you know that out of 70% of people who abandon their carts while shopping, 40% open their abandoned cart email to reconsider it? This means that you have a huge opportunity to convert them into your customers.

With Klaviyo, creating an abandoned cart campaign is super easy, as the platform keeps track of all customers’ activity on your site. So, according to the customers’ purchase behavior, you can design a tailor-made email to ask them to complete the purchase or any exclusive offer you can provide them on that purchase.

2) The Welcome Series Campaign

Like an abandoned cart campaign, a welcome series campaign is equally important as it builds a relationship between a brand and a customer. Those who have subscribed to your newsletter recently or can be your potential customer can send them Welcome emails regarding your collection/services, new user discount codes, and other tools/resources you have for them.

In Klaviyo, you also get a feature to add dynamic content in your emails or messages to make them more engaging and eye-catching for readers.

3) The Post-Purchase Upsell Campaign

In Klaviyo, there is a Predictive Analysis feature to design a post-purchase upsell campaign for those customers who have purchased something from your store in the past but then never returned after that. To win back such customers, you can use this feature to provide you with all the information you require to target these segments of people.

Klaviyo SMS Marketing Ideas

Effective SMS marketing is as crucial for your business as Email marketing. In fact, SMS notifies customers more promptly than an Email as people hardly miss SMS on their phone as compared to an unread email in their mailbox.

But both SMS and Email marketing differ slightly in terms of delivery and tone you are using. While in Email marketing, you can add plenty of content; an SMS must be short, crisp, engaging and informative (slightly informal).

You can use SMS marketing for various purposes like to notify people about an upcoming sale, VIP access notifications, discount codes and promotion updates, etc. Here are the best three SMS marketing ideas that you must try on Klaviyo to get better results:

1) Send a welcome message

A welcome message can be either sent individually to your subscribers or new customers or compiled with Email marketing. If you want to compile it with email marketing, make sure the context & content of both SMS and Email copy match each other. Also, you have to strategize your timing accordingly while planning to send both email and SMS.

2) Send an SMS reminder for anything

Reminder messages increase conversion up to some extent. You can design reminder SMS for various purposes like Abandoned Cart, Upcoming anniversary offer, any exclusive offer, restock notification and so on. You can retain customers for a long time through reminder messages as your brand name will always be in their minds.

3) Send a thank-you

Thank you messages can be for various reasons, like when someone makes their purchase on your website or participates in any contest you have organized. Every time a customer performs some beneficial action on your site, you can appreciate them through a thank you message. Sometimes, you can also reward them with something as a thank you gesture.

Comparison: Shopify Email vs Klaviyo

In 2019, Shopify launched its email marketing service within the platform that comes complimentary with every Shopify plan. As both Shopify email and Klaviyo are popular email marketing tools, it is difficult to decide which one works better. Here are a few aspects of Shopify Email vs Klaviyo, based on which you can pick the right one for you:

1) Structure of Pricing

Both Shopify Email and Klaviyo offer you a free trial plan for the beginning, but as your business expands, you have to move to their paid plans to access more features and benefits.

Klaviyo’s free plan allows you to send a maximum of 500 emails to 250 contacts and 150 SMS to up to 50 contacts. As your contact lists increase, you have to shift on its basic or higher plans. The basic plan starts with $20 and allows you to send unlimited emails to up to 300 contacts. If your contact list is pretty long, you can choose a $600 plan that will enable you to mail up to 36,000 contacts.

On the other hand, in Shopify email’s free plan, you can send a total of 2500 emails per month for free. After that, the platform charges you $1 for every 1000 emails.

2) Access to Shopify data

Although Shopify email is the part of Shopify platform, Klaviyo claims that it has more access to Shopify Data than the former. You can integrate with Shopify on Klaviyo through a one-click, and then it assists you in reaching the targeted audience through hyper-targeted email and social media marketing. This is because Shopify gets a good percentage on every amount an advertiser spends on Klaviyo.

3) Segmentation

The good thing is segmentation is vast and manual in Klaviyo, unlike Shopify email. While the Shopify email automatically segments your contacts list on its specified criteria, Klaviyo offers you the freedom to segment it on your preferred criteria.

In Klaviyo, segmentation can be done on multiple criteria; some of the popular ones are:

  • Purchase Behavior
  • Shopping Interests
  • Past Purchase History
  • Facebook Custom Audience
  • Prior participation in campaigns

In the Shopify email, the specified criteria for segmentation are:

  • Returned Customers
  • New Customers
  • VIP Customers
  • Customers from the surrounding area

4) Pre-built templates

Shopify email offers you limited pre-build templates to choose from for your store. It automatically extracts your logo, shop color and other items related to branding to create a template for your store.

On the contrary, Klaviyo has an extensive library of pre-built templates for your store. You can choose what suits best to your brand and products. Also, you can edit & customize the template by changing color, font, pictures, and theme at your convenience.

5) Analytics

While Klaviyo offers you basic analytics like data based on campaigns, flows and performance, Shopify has much more to provide you with because it tracks everything that happens on your website.

Apart from CTR and email opening rates, Shopify also offers statistics about products added to the cart and the shopping history of email recipients.

6) Web-tracking

For website tracking with Klaviyo, you have to embed a tracking code in your website. Based on your website data, Klaviyo lets you send personalized email and SMS to customers about the steps they have taken or should take to complete a purchase.

Shopify has direct access to all the website data if your store is built on it, and thus website tracking is quite simple.

7) Individualization

Both Shopify email and Klaviyo let you create email content using dynamic data blocks. These blocks are based on:

  • Custom feeds
  • Cart Contents
  • Order Details
  • Promote Products

Comparison: Klaviyo vs Mailchimp?

Both Klaviyo and Mailchimp are popular marketing tools that allow automation and other powerful features to take your email marketing campaigns to the next level. Here are a few of the aspects to compare the strengths and weaknesses of Klaviyo vs Mailchimp:

1) Pricing

The price structure of Klaviyo is much simpler than Mailchimp. In Klaviyo, the basic pricing apart from the free plan starts with $20 and increases based on the number of contacts you want to send emails and messages to. In terms of features, Klaviyo offers the same features in all plans, including the free one.

On the other hand, Mailchimp pricing is quite complex and categorized in four parameters:

  • Number of Contacts
  • Numbers of Emails you need to send monthly
  • Number of Seats
  • Number of Features

Mailchimp’s free plan includes basic functions like simple automation, pre-built templates, signup forms, landing pages, etc. In the free plan, you can send unlimited emails to up to 2,000 contacts. After that, you can choose any of their paid plans at your convenience.

2) What is the difference?

The basic difference between both the tools is in their features and price plans. While Klaviyo offers you the same features irrespective of price plans, Mailchimp upgrades the features as you go to the higher price plans.

  • Mailchimp’s Free Plan is better and effective for those who need limited features in the beginning to test email marketing for their business. Because in its free plan, you can send emails up to 2000 contacts, while in Klaviyo’s free plan, it is limited to only 250 contacts.
  • Klaviyo’s price structure is simple and beneficial for those who want more features, in the beginning, to test email marketing on limited contacts.

3) Automation

Both Klaviyo and Mailchimp offer you a series of Pre-Built automation, but the only difference is how many layers of automation are provided by each of these tools. While Mailchimp offers you pre-built automation, Klaviyo lets you customize that automation to enhance sales and results.

Mailchimp offers the following pre-built automation for effective email marketing:

  • Welcome series automation to greet new subscribers
  • Abandoned cart automation to follow up with subscribers
  • Product recommendation or cross-sell automation
  • Order Notifications
  • Retargeting automation to win back customers

Compared to Mailchimp, Klaviyo offers fewer pre-built automation, but they are more customizable based on the real-performance data. These four automation ones:

  • A/B testing
  • Welcome series automation
  • Reminders about Browse Abandonments
  • Retargeting

4) Integration

Email marketing tools are effective when they are easy to integrate with the existing eCommerce stores on various platforms like Shopify, Woocommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, etc.

Mailchimp can seamlessly integrate with stripe to set up the domain hosted by Mailchimp. Apart from that, it can also be integrated with WordPress, Woocommerce, Magento, Bigcommerce, etc. Although there is no direct integration of Mailchimp with the Shopify store, you can use ShopSync to perform the integration.

On the contrary, Integration of Klaviyo with Shopify is super easy and can be done with a single click. Not only with Shopify, but Klaviyo can also integrate with almost any eCommerce website builder like Magento, Bigcommerce, Salesforce, Zapier, etc.

5) Analytics

For effective audience segmentation, you need Predictive Analytics based on their past and current purchase behavior. Both Klaviyo and Mailchimp offer Predictive Analytics to automate the segmentation process by focusing on Customer Lifetime Value (CLV).

By analyzing customers’ past purchase behavior and pattern, the tools segment them into Low, Moderate and High CLV groups.

Mailchimp: Apart from the CLV prediction, the tool offers two more crucial features, i.e. Purchase Feature and Lookalike Audience Finder tool. The purchase feature lets users analyze the segments of customers who are more likely to make a future purchase. The lookalike audience finder tool uses CRM data and Mailchimp’s audience data to reach people resembling the existing customer base.

Klaviyo: Compared to Mailchimp, Klaviyo’s predictive analytics tool is more detailed, customizable and straightforward. There are two crucial features in this analytics tool, i.e. Predictive Model and Gender Prediction feature.

The predictive model offers a spectrum of historic and predictive CLV to understand future purchases. It also highlights the time passed between a customer’s orders and their next expected order date. As the predictive model automatically updates every week, you get real-time audience data to analyze their purchase behavior and history.

The Gender Prediction feature uses customers’ past census data to segment the audience list based on their gender and preferences.

6) Testing

To test which email format is working for which kind of audience segment, both Klaviyo and Mailchimp offer you an A/B testing feature. Using this feature, you can experiment with your subject line, email content, sender names, audience percentage, etc., to check which works best for whom.

Mailchimp: In Mailchimp’s A/B feature, you can try three variations of every email by altering subject lines and sending time. Based on the success of open rate, clicks or sales, the platform sends the winning email version to the rest of the audience.

Klaviyo: Irrespective of its paid plans, Klaviyo offers a maximum of seven variations of every email compared to Mailchimp’s three email variations. It means with Klaviyo; you can test more email variations to check which works better for your audience. Also, its A/B testing feature extends to automation workflow.

7) Which Tool Is Right for Your Business?

Both Klaviyo and Mailchimp offer advanced email marketing features in their respective price plans. But if you want better customization, automation with simpler price plans, Klaviyo is better than Mailchimp and offers you vast integration options compared to others.

Comparison: Klaviyo vs ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is better for non-eCommerce stores, while Klaviyo is preferably for eCommerce stores. Here are the key differences between both tools based on the following aspects:

1) Dashboard

ActiveCampaign offers very limited features related to the email marketing results for eCommerce stores, like Contact Growth, Active Users, Email Campaigns, Contacts growth, etc., which are not enough to understand which email marketing strategy is actually working for your business.

On the other hand, Klaviyo offers extensive and detailed email marketing features on the dashboard, including total store revenue and revenue generated via automated email workflow and campaigns. It lets you break down per automation flow and campaign to understand which campaign leads to sales and which is not.

2) Campaigns

Both ActiveCampaign and Klaviyo offer easy-to-use drag-and-drop campaign builders. But one solid & valuable feature that only Klaviyo offers is Dynamic Product Feed. Using this feature, you can customize your store as per your desires and include this feed block in emails. As it is a dynamic feed block, it keeps updating all the information time-to-time in emails to keep users aware.

3) Integrations

Both Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign offer direct and indirect integration with multiple software and tools online to make marketing effective. For indirect integration in both tools, you need to purchase the paid plan of Zapier. Apart from it, the platforms also offer direct integrations:

Klaviyo: Here is the direct integration list of apps you can connect with Klaviyo. ActiveCampaign: Here is the direct integration list of apps you can connect with ActiveCampaign.

4) For Ecommerce Platforms

Both Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign offer integration with eCommerce platforms like Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, etc., but differ a bit. In Klaviyo, all subscribers’ activity is shown as a feed, including website visits, purchases, checkout activity and more. Using this information, you can create segments and automation for effective marketing.

In ActiveCampaign, website visits are shown in the feed. The other details like product purchase, checkout, products viewed appear in fields. These fields get updated from time to time to display real-time data, but past data disappears, which is not good if you want to personalize emails based on past activities.

5) Opt-In Forms

Both platforms offer easy to use and drag-and-drop opt-in features.

6) Analytics vs Reports

The analytics feature of Klaviyo is very powerful and detailed. You can customize the dashboard using various dynamic tiles, including details like the number of subscribers & unsubscribers, popular products, etc. By default, Klaviyo’s dashboard shows the following options:

  • Business Overview
  • Campaign Overview
  • Emails Overview
  • Flows Overview
  • Forms Overview

In ActiveCampaign, reporting features are limited and don’t provide many details about making revenue from the campaigns. It only gives you limited conversion details like open rate, click-through rate, goals, deals, etc.

7) Coupons

The dynamic coupons feature is not available in ActiveCampaign, but you can purchase extra service from Revenue Conduit to generate dynamic codes. On the contrary, Klaviyo offers dynamic coupons for Shopify and Magento. For Shopify, the process is simple and easy, but for Magento, it is a bit complex (you have to first create the coupon and then link it with Klaviyo).

8) Flows vs Automation

Both platforms offer excellent flow and automation builders. In ActiveCampaign, you get vast options to create automation, with features like “add this automation” or start another one.

There is another crucial feature in ActiveCampaign that you won’t find in Klaviyo, i.e. End Other Automation if a subscriber is in one automation. Also, there is an addition of a new feature called “Automations Map” that provides an overall picture of automation and their connection with each other.

In Klaviyo, there are four triggers to create flows (enough for all eCommerce marketing), and these triggers are:

  • List
  • Segment
  • Metric
  • Date Property

9) Tags

While the ActiveCampaign has tags, Klaviyo doesn’t offer them because all the information is saved in the user’s profile.

10) Subscribers Profile

There is a massive difference in the subscribers’ profiles of both Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign. As Klaviyo is exclusively designed for eCommerce stores, its subscribers’ profile shows all the relevant details related to conversions, revenues, and activities.

On the contrary, the ActiveCampaign subscriber profile is not as dynamic as Klaviyo because it acts more like a CRM. Thus it only displays limited information related to conversion and other integrated activities without showing the contact part of any particular segment.

11) Segments

Both Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign have list and segmentation options. Still, Klaviyo’s segmentation is more customizable and powerful than ActiveCampaign because it has more user data, and thus you can create segments on a large number of factors in Klaviyo.

12) Pricing

If you compare the price plans of Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign, you will find Klaviyo a bit expensive. Still, it is totally justified as it offers you more detailed & advanced features than ActiveCampaign.

So, if you want a detailed analysis of your email marketing to understand which marketing strategy leads to conversions, Klaviyo is worth every penny. Here are the price plans for Klaviyo.

But if you only want to send emails for branding and don’t want to know whether they are leading to conversions or not, ActiveCampaign is a cheap option. Here are the price plans for ActiveCampaign.

Then you can switch to its Standard Plan, starting with $16 to get more advanced features to send up to 15,000 emails to 500 subscribers. Increasing the subscribers count to 1500 or 3000 makes the plan price $25 or $60, respectively.

Omnisend’s Pro plan starts with $99 for 500 subscribers, allowing 15,000 emails and free SMS credits to be sent per month. If you increase the subscribers count up to 3000, the plan costs you $120.
